December 18, 2015 (Day 18)

I am over 1/2 through the program and this blog & it just occurred to me that I have really not told you anything about myself - for those of you that don't know me. I am 60ish & a retired professional living in Florida.  I am an "experienced" dieter (ha) from way back.  My daughter & some of her friends did a Whole30 until Thanksgiving in November & I was intrigued. I had never heard of  Whole30 so I read about it - all the material is on the Whole30 website and free - whole30.com.  She & her friends had a good experience -both feeling better & losing weight -so I thought why not?

Now you may think it is odd that I chose to do my first month in December - probably the most sugar-loaded, non-diet friendly month of the year. However, since I was visiting my daughter for a week - see earlier posts - & because we don't celebrate Christmas and therefore don't have tons of Christmas events to attend (with the attendant food & alcohol), December has worked just fine for me. I am also lucky to be very close to a Fresh Market, Trader Joe's & Whole Foods, so some of the items (though there aren't many) that you may not find in a traditional grocery store are easily accessible.

On another topic, I think I have mentioned before that I have been a Weight Watchers member/participant for a number of years (& I've been pretty successful at it when I stay on program; the problem is when I don't). Almost every year, WW "changes" the plan a bit around the first of the year (probably, she said cynically, to attract new members who resolve to lose weight in the new year). In the past, the changes have mostly been fairly meaningless tweeks (IMO). WW continued to say that you can eat what you like "but count it."  This year the change seems different.

From what I understand, WW is putting much more emphasis on "healthy" eating and substantially increasing "points" for sugar & items with sugar.  "Weight Watchers is using a new formula that looks at the type of fat in a given food, for instance, with saturated fat pointed more heavily.  Lean protein, too, has fewer points than other meats.  And while the old formula lumped sugar in with carbohydrates, they're now calculated separately."

One member on my WW board complained that a piece of cake went from 14 points to 23 on the new program (could it be because of all the sugar?). Maybe Whole30 is on to something?!
