December 31 (Day +1)

Okay, the verdict is in... lost a little over 6 pounds in the 30 days. Wish it had been more, but as you age you lose more slowly.  I think I am going to stay with the program, but maybe not as strictly. I've really loved not counting stuff and knowing exactly what to eat and not eat.  Thanks for all who've kept up with me. I'll update as warranted.

December 30, 2015 (Day 30!)

Wow! Day 30... can't believe it.  In keeping with the  program, I've just returned from Fresh Market, where I bought fresh grouper for dinner, along with some navel oranges.

"Last" (probably not) veggie omelet for lunch.

"Last" Whole30 dinner: grouper, roasted brussels sprouts (one of my favs), & sweet potato:

I'll report on my weight tomorrow... keep your fingers crossed. (It could get ugly!!)

December 29, 2015 (Day 29)

Can this really be Day 29?  I'm astounded by how quickly the 30 days went & amazed that I have committed to the program for that long... with no cheating.  Hope I see some results on the scale & if I don't, hope I am mature enough to recognize the other benefits of the program.  Not entirely sure of my maturity level!

After mall walking with friends (the weather was terrible here), I  had the kale & Brussels sprout salad with chicken for lunch  at BJs.  It was good but I forgot to take a pic. :(

December 28, 2015 (Day 28)

Down to the wire! Dining alone tonight, so I guess it will just be hot dogs & salad. Turned out to be hot dogs & little potatoes.

December 27, 2015 (day 27)

Doesn't seem that long ago that I was counting days until I began the Whole30.  Now, I'm  counting down to the end - only 3 more days!  As I said yesterday, I am nervous because I am the sort of person who likes strict rules to follow - that is probably why I am doing so well on this program.  When I get weighed on Day 31, I will decide how to proceed. But I will say I am now much more aware of what  I eat & cutting out diet soda (I am in love with Coke Zero) can only be a good thing.

Trying a new recipe tonight. Enchilada Stuffed Sweet Potatoes.  I've avoided this recipe - even though the  folks in my Whole30 group say it is great - because you have to make a separate sauce. I hate that.

This recipe was very good. I cut it down a bit to have dinner for 2 nights.  And I used the onions in the sauce because the only arrowroot I could find was a 1 pound bag for over $7.00.  That seemed like a waste for a recipe that calls for 3 tablespoons. Also, I did not puree them and they were fine.

Finally, the sweet potatoes took MUCH longer than 40 minutes to bake.  I'd say at least an hour and I have a fairly new oven, so be warned. Next time, it will be a breeze.

December 26, 2015 (day 26)

Only a couple more days  to go & I am nervous.  The book says to just evaluate how much you want to eat something and if it is not great, don't eat it. Sounds pretty vague to me.  I need rules!  Suggestions welcome.

December 25, 2015 (Day 25)

Ok friends... I admit it.  Today I am bummed on the Whole30 - really the first day I've felt deprived.  Though many people celebrate Christmas today (as you may have guessed), I am Jewish.  For years & years, a movie and Chinese food with great friends is how we spend the day. But no Chinese food for me today.  Waaaa.

December 24, 2015  (day 24)

A "boring" Whole30 day. No new recipes to report.  Doing tried & true today- making the seasoned chicken, potato & green beans posted on Day 16.  It is a great recipe.  My husband (non Whole30 loves it) & it is a good & easy recipe even if you are not on the Whole30.

December 23, 2015 (day 23)

First of all, I can't believe I only have 7 more days to go. I am surprised that it has been relatively easy.

Today is my wedding anniversary. Normally, that would involve a (fattening) dinner and drinks out & a sugar-laden dessert.  But due to Whole30, we are eating in; still, I wanted to do something a little special. I've mentioned before that  since we keep Kosher this adds a bit more of a challenge for meat (all meat has to be certified Kosher & there are very few places to get Kosher meat in Tallahassee). But I went to Trader Joe's yesterday and picked up some Kosher rib eye steaks, so that will be a treat.

So here is my anniversary dinner: steak, salad, roasted butternut squash (recipe courtesy of my "third daughter" & RD, Amy Gorin), and roasted Brussels sprouts.

The squash:

Happy Anniversary to us!

December 22, 2015 (day 22)

After mall walk with friends, went to Trader Joe's - my new go to store.  Found organic hot dogs that are Whole30 compliant:

So this was my lunch.  Yum, I love hot dogs!

Ate dried fruit for snack...know  I am not supposed to.  :(

Weather is awful & rainy. Will be nice to have leftover chicken soup for dinner.

Monday, December 21, 2015

December 21, 2015 (Day 21)

Just another Whole30 day.  Up early to exercise, so just had a Lara bar for breakfast. Lunch with my former partner - had spinach salad with egg & bacon. Leftover chili for dinner.

Feel like I am "snacking" too much - even though it is all Whole30 compliant.  Today I had dried mango, some cashews & apple with almond butter.  Guideline say try not to snack.  Am itching to find out if I've lost weight. Don't feel like I have.  :(

Sunday, December 20, 2015

December 20, 2015 (Day 20)

I can't believe that it is Day 20 already.  These 30 days have flown.  This morning -  Sunday - I had a leisurely breakfast with hubby - veggie omelet & home fries. Tip: the home fries take much longer than the omelet, so get them going first. Then 4 mile walk.

For dinner, Crock Pot Chicken Soup:

Before cooking:

After cooking:

Recipe is a little bland - next time I will add some dill & way more salt, but crock pot is a great way to cook chicken soup (for a lot of folks) which I would not have thought of.

Wanted a hot beverage - other than coffee - after dinner and not being able to add sweetener to regular tea, I tried the Rooibos tea below. They had it at Trader Joe's and it is recommended in the Whole30 book.  My review: meh, it's okay but nothing great. Still, it will do in a pinch.

December 19, 2015 (Day 19)

This doesn't really have much to do with Whole30, but the weather has finally turned cooler (40s - ha- this is Florida), and a group I sometimes walk with - Move Tallahassee- had a 4 mile walk around the FSU campus this morning. It was a great walk - students are gone, no parking problems, chatting with old friends & exercising too!

Then off to Trader Joe's to restock my pantry. Proud of myself that I did not even have to go to Publix. I hate grocery shopping at more than one place. Here is my TJ haul:

December 18, 2015 (Day 18)

I am over 1/2 through the program and this blog & it just occurred to me that I have really not told you anything about myself - for those of you that don't know me. I am 60ish & a retired professional living in Florida.  I am an "experienced" dieter (ha) from way back.  My daughter & some of her friends did a Whole30 until Thanksgiving in November & I was intrigued. I had never heard of  Whole30 so I read about it - all the material is on the Whole30 website and free - whole30.com.  She & her friends had a good experience -both feeling better & losing weight -so I thought why not?

Now you may think it is odd that I chose to do my first month in December - probably the most sugar-loaded, non-diet friendly month of the year. However, since I was visiting my daughter for a week - see earlier posts - & because we don't celebrate Christmas and therefore don't have tons of Christmas events to attend (with the attendant food & alcohol), December has worked just fine for me. I am also lucky to be very close to a Fresh Market, Trader Joe's & Whole Foods, so some of the items (though there aren't many) that you may not find in a traditional grocery store are easily accessible.

On another topic, I think I have mentioned before that I have been a Weight Watchers member/participant for a number of years (& I've been pretty successful at it when I stay on program; the problem is when I don't). Almost every year, WW "changes" the plan a bit around the first of the year (probably, she said cynically, to attract new members who resolve to lose weight in the new year). In the past, the changes have mostly been fairly meaningless tweeks (IMO). WW continued to say that you can eat what you like "but count it."  This year the change seems different.

From what I understand, WW is putting much more emphasis on "healthy" eating and substantially increasing "points" for sugar & items with sugar.  "Weight Watchers is using a new formula that looks at the type of fat in a given food, for instance, with saturated fat pointed more heavily.  Lean protein, too, has fewer points than other meats.  And while the old formula lumped sugar in with carbohydrates, they're now calculated separately."

One member on my WW board complained that a piece of cake went from 14 points to 23 on the new program (could it be because of all the sugar?). Maybe Whole30 is on to something?!

December 17, 2015 (Day 17)

I think it may be getting boring to read about what I eat each day, especially when it is repetitive. So, I thought, since I am 1/2 way through, I'd try to think about some non-food pros & cons of the Whole30 for me.

One thing that has been refreshing has been the "rule" to NOT get weighed for the entire program. As someone who has spent most of her life tied to the dictates of the scale, it is freeing to not have to think about "that number" for a whole 30 (ha, ha) days.  I don't know if I've  gained or lost, but maybe I don't  care??  Wow, that would be a first. This is a big pro!

Another big pro for me has been that the program itself has not been that difficult. I have not really missed dairy or carbs (well, maybe carbs a little) & have not had much sugar withdrawal. I expected it to be much harder.

Biggest con for me is all the planning, prep etc that has to go into eating. I HATE not being able to go out to eat most of the time (even if it is just a salad, which BTW I am eating out today or a "healthy" restaurant meal -maybe there is no such thing?). Even though I am a veteran dieter, I don't think I've ever thought so much about what is in what I eat (could that be a pro?) or planned so much for each meal. I am  not a big cooking fan & on this program, it is required.  Also, the cooking (due to the freshness, non processed ingredients etc) takes a lot more preparation & time, though the crock pot mitigates this somewhat. Again, could be that this is really a "pro" that I am just not that excited about yet.

If you care to comment, I'd like to know your pros and cons regarding the Whole30 program.

December 16, 2015 (day 16)

Monkey salad for breakfast. But then I had to take my car in because I was getting a low pressure warning. Was told it would be about 1 1/2 hours, sooo instead of sitting on my azzz, I went & walked for an hour. Don't know if I can credit Whole30 for this (I am a walker & fit bit fanatic), but it is a "non food victory." (Bonus, just a leak... fixed at no charge!)

Then on to the grocery store. I had my list and was astonished that 99% of my shopping was in the produce section.  The only things that were non produce were some paper products & tuna, olives, olive oil & balsamic vinegar, which I am using a ton of. My fantastic Whole30 cart:

Lunch was typical tuna over salad.

For dinner, I am making Seasoned Chicken, Potatoes & Green Beans.  I ate this at my daughter's & it was delish so making it for hubby & me.  It is a really easy crock pot meal & in contrast to most crock pot meals, only takes 4 hours on high.

December 15, 2015 (Day 15)

Today is shaping up to be a pretty boring day, but that's ok because I won't have to think about what to cook or eat but can be on auto pilot.

Breakfast: egg muffins (2) & raspberries

Lunch: salad with chicken; I had some leftover chicken in the freezer, so in an effort to eat less tuna (as daughter has been nagging me about it), I threw the cooked chicken on a salad with avocado, black olives & oil & vinegar dressing.

Snack: Apple with almond butter

Dinner: chili & salad

Today was one of the few days I felt hungry.  Maybe that fits in with the cravings the timeline notes on Days 12-15 or more likely "the part of the program where our minds try to drive us back to the comfort of the foods we used to know." Had some nuts in between meals which I generally don't do. Sticking with it! Goodnight Day 15.

Monday, December 14, 2015

December 14, 2015 (Day 14)

Half way there!! It hasn't been bad; I haven't cheated; we will hope for the same in the 2nd half.

I am back home so have more time to cook. For breakfast, I made Paleo Breakfast Muffins.  The recipe makes 12 & I like that I can make a batch & have it for a few days.  Also, good for grab and go. Since I keep Kosher, I had to leave out the sausage, but they were still good.  Next time, I might add some ground beef.  One tip: be sure to spray each muffin tin well. I was sort of hap hazard about it, so some stuck and others didn't.

Before they were baked:

After:

Bagged & in fridge for future breakfasts:

Sorry to disappoint, but had monkey salad for lunch. :(

New snack I found in Fresh Market - Crispy Fruit. They have many, many flavors - all fruit, nothing else. The servings are pretty small. Probably best saved for emergencies.  I had one & still had my apple & almond butter.

Left over chili for dinner.

December 13, 2015 (Day 13)

Back home!  After long day yesterday, hubby pampered me with lovely veggie omelet.

Ok, ok.... a Lara bar for lunch. Rushed off for errands & movie with hubby BUT made great Whole30 dinner - fish in foil (which my daughter made when I visited), roasted Brussels sprouts & salad. I'm BACCCCKKKKKK.

Just about 1/2 way & its going well.

December 12, (day 12)

Today was crazy! Lots of activities and heading back to Fl, so my eating shows it.  Breakfast was the ever popular Monkey Salad.  Lunch -at the airport- was Lara Bar.

But dinner was a salad at Mellow Mushroom. Now you  would not think of Mellow Mushroom on a Whole30 plan, but they have a "build your own salad" which lets you choose what you want. So I choose lots of veggies, avocado & bacon. It was great & filled me up.  Forgot to snap pic.  :(  Hard to believe that I did not miss the pizza, even though I LOVE pizza. Thanks, Whole30.

December 11, 2015 (day 11)

Lara bar for breakfast. I was just so pooped from kid early mornings that it was all I could manage. First one I've had. Had the cherry pie flavor & it was good but I see why it is recommended only for emergencies.  I could gobble several.

For lunch took granddaughter to chick-a-filet. They were so nice!! Made me a salad with fresh strawberries, blueberries, apples & grilled chicken. (No dressing of course).  So just ask when you do have to eat out. You'll be surprised how accommodating places can be.

Late dinner of seasoned chicken, tomato & green beans made in crock pot. Very tasty.

Goodnight day 11!

Thursday, December 10, 2015

December 10 (day 10)

Yes, good old monkey salad for breakfast. Lazy me. (but baby was up early as was kindergartner and I just didn't have the energy to make anything). But, hopefully to make up for it, took a very long walk in beautiful weather. Already have my 10,000 steps for the day and it's only lunchtime (you fit bit people know what I'm talking about).

Lunch was leftover chicken curry from last night and some grapes. I don't really feel any thinner but I'm staying off the scale as directed.

Marinated mahi, roasted Brussels sprouts & plaintains for dinner.

In bed @ 8:30 due to grandkids. I'm feeling fine but not really any different so can't wait for all the energy. Where are you?  Could have used you this week!!

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

December 9, 2015 (day 9)

Veggie omolet for breakfast.

Walk/bike ride/picnic @ the park. Dau made yummy chicken salad with her homemade compliant mayo. She put in lots of crunchies, like celery,  grapes, almonds & some hard boiled eggs. It was delish.

I feel like I've been grabbing nuts too often (& those apple chips), so have to watch that.

For dinner, chicken curry that dau got from Pinterest recipe. Really liked it & will try to find recipe once I get home. Don't feel like I am eating enough salad/veggies, like I do at home, but just doesn't seem to be enough time (tonight dau & I didn't eat til 8 pm -after kids were down-& were in no mood to fool with making a salad). When I get home, I'll work more in.

Tuesday, December 8, 2015

December 8, 2015 (day 8)

Day 1 of week 2. Ok, I'll admit it. I am getting kind of bored with this and also miss the convenience of just being able to eat out when I want. But, I am feeling good and not really feeling hungry just bored with what I'm eating. Part of it probably has to do with being away from home and being with my grandchildren. In the morning, I just don't want to bother cooking something and so have probably been having the monkey salad too much. Had it for breakfast this morning. My daughter doesn't seem to mind cooking in the morning and she made herself a delicious omelette with hash, but I had already eaten.I need to work on the cooking aspect when I get home. Other than that, so far, so good.

For lunch, the usual - & boring- tuna salad. Then daughter came home from Fresh Market with compliant apple chips. So good but I could eat the whole package (portion control issues anyone else??) so I won't buy them at home unless I can find smaller packages.  Dau make latte with cashew milk - quite good.

For dinner, I went out with grandson & had a grand time & a great Cobb salad.

Monday, December 7, 2015

December 7, 2015 (Day 7)

Another busy day with daughter & little grandkids. Quick monkey salad for breakfast. Lunch was leftover sweet potato/Apple  hash with a hard boiled egg left over from daughter's breakfast.

Dinner - yummy beef stew in crockpot pot with green salad. First week down!! Not bad. Yeah me!

Sunday, December 6, 2015

December 6, 2015 (day 6)

Whole30ing with my daughter. So much easier - she made the kids pancakes; I made us a veggie omelet. Kids had p, b & j for lunch. We had a salad - mine just tuna over lettuce, hers tuna lettuce wrap. Daughter made Whole30 mayo - not bad . .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbPF_rLpd9o.  But so fun to do program in same house as someone else.

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah. Thank goodness traditional latkes (potato pancakes) are Whole30 compliant - potatoes, onions, eggs. Applesauce as well. Yum!

Saturday, December 5, 2015

December 5, 2015 (Day 5)

Secret to Whole30 - be in charge of 3 small children- in my case- grandkids. Between getting them breakfast & getting them dressed, grabbed a hard boiled egg & handful of nuts! Hoping I can find time for lunch salad so, if you are having trouble sticking with it - find some small kids.  Again, no real "dinner" because too tired after outing with kids & then getting the tired little ones to bed. Going to meal plan with daughter & have more regular meals this week.

Friday, December 4, 2015

December 4, 2015 (Day 4)

Feel ok this morning (but I surely need my coffee to "perk" me up).  Off to NC (Lara Bars & almonds in my purse) for a week to visit daughter and grandkids, but it should be fine since daughter (& her great friends) are the ones who started me on Whole30. Their posts and recipes have been great.

Monkey Salad for breakfast.  Then travelled to NC to help with 3 grandkids. Well that took my mind off food. Tuna salad for lunch. Then could not get baby to sleep so apple & almond butter for dinner.

Thursday, December 3, 2015

December 3, 2015 (Day 3)

Loved the Monkey Salad. It may not look that great in the picture, but bananas, cashews, coconut... what could be bad? (Oh yeah, & an egg.) Still trying to get my arms around the fact that I am "allowed" to eat nuts, olives etc.

Feeling a little "woozy" & head achy this morning. I'm off to volunteer in the library, so we'll see how that goes. Headache still persisted this afternoon so I took some Advil.  This is the first day I've had any "withdrawal" symptoms.

Cupcakes at the library? No thank you!  :)  Yeah me!

Non food "reward": used 50% off coupon at Talbots to get some winter pjs.  I love Talbots pjs. Cute, huh?

Good night Day 3!

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

December 2, 2015 (Day 2)

Alright folks, let's talk coffee. Seriously, the FIRST thing I do in the morning... and I mean the FIRST...is start the coffee.  We have a great coffee maker that grinds the beans and then brews.  We set it up the night before & then just press start in the morning.

So I love me my coffee!  Usually, I put in a splenda and some flavored creamer (at this time of year, I love pumpkin spice.  And yes, I love Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes!)  So I was worried that using only coconut milk and no sweetener would be a bummer. Surprise! I actually like the coconut milk & can really taste the coffee.  So coffee lovers (like me), no worries!

Also, I was prepared to feel yucky today, based on the Whole30 timeline, Days 2-3 are supposed to be "hangover" days, but so far so good.  Ok, its only 10 am. I'll report back at the end of the day.

I had the same breakfast, lunch & dinner as yesterday (I am lazy & clearly need to change it up) but did have almond butter & an apple for snack.Yummy!

While I did have a veggie omelet for breakfast again,  I  need something quicker for breakfast.  Someone suggested Monkey Salad, so off  I went to Trader Joe's for the ingredients. I see a lot more TJ in my future as it is much easier to find non preservative products there.

Recipe for Monkey Salad is below, though you probably don't need it. I will try it tomorrow, probably along with a hard boiled egg.  I don't really like eggs, so no one is more surprised than me that I am eating so many.

Ok, Day 2 is over & I felt fine. We will see what Day 3 brings.  One thing is for sure, I am going to have to work on some different menu items!

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

December 1, 2015 (Day 1)

Breakfast: veggie omelet. I hate eggs, but made it well done & it wasn't bad. One "issue" - how long it takes to make everything. My prior go to breakfast was yogurt & fruit.  Prep time: 10 seconds.

Lunch: tuna over lettuce with peppers, mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, avocado, oil & vinegar. Hard to get used to being "allowed" to eat all this fat.

Snack: nuts. Love TJ's prepackaged nuts because I have a "huge" (ha, ha) problem with portion control.

Dinner: Started Paleo sweet potato chili in crock pot for dinner. Used 1 lb turkey & 1 lb beef because that is what I had. Looks like it makes a ton so I will have lots to freeze.

So dinner was pretty good...maybe could have been a bit spicier.  Recipe calls for "1/2 cup chili powder." That can't be right, so I may have gone too lightly.  Made enough for many more meals.   Froze some & we will be eating it Weds & Thurs for dinner.

Today was fine, but prepared to "hit wall" tomorrow.

November 30, 2015  (Day -1)

About to begin my Whole30 Adventure tomorrow.  I have dieted off and on my whole life.  Weight Watchers has seemed to work the best, but I am inspired by my daughter & her  friends to try the Whole30.  It is very different from WW, with its emphasis on eating just healthy foods & lots of restrictions. (On WW, their mantra, is "you can eat whatever you want.")  But, I feel like I need to jump start or do something different, especially after a cruise AND Thanksgiving! So, wish me luck. We will see if I can do it.

Today was shopping day to prepare for Day 1! No, not that kind of shopping... Trip to Trader Joe's for organic, no preservative stuff... labeling reading 101. Then on to Publix for produce etc.  Wasn't bad, but reading labels is a good habit I will have to work on.  Surprising how much stuff has sugar in it (why is there sugar in canned tomatoes?).

My treat - shopping trip to Chicos to take advantage of 50% off.
